THE BACKGROUND:

Dave Shaw, owner/creative director of Flying Napkins, also used to own a small bar/pizza place in Columbia, SC. When the bar (Locals) first opened, it was surrounded by 27 other bars/restaurants, so Locals needed something different to stand out. Being responsible for the advertising but also scrutinized over the budget (or lack of one), led to the decision  of tossing beverage napkins into the air during key songs – to get the crowd excited and amp up the atmosphere.

This simple gesture took off. Literally. "Locals" became the most popular destination in Columbia for drinks and big slice pizza, and everyone that patronized the business would also throw napkins, making the entertainment interactive for all.


Locals was open for over 8 years before the business partners decided to take different routes and sold the business. But the general idea behind it all still remains today.

In a sea of competition, it isn't always necessary to launch a million dollar campaign and media blitz. Sometimes, you just need something different. Something creative. Something memorable.


And it worked. And it can work for your business as well. You have to analyze your competition, research your own business, know your target demographics, reach deep down inside of all the inner workings... and find your company's "FLYING NAPKIN." When you do, the sky is the limit. And chances are, you won't need a ridiculous advertising/media budget to pull it off.

Dave Shaw

Creative Director/owner


Dave graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Journalism. He began working for advertising agencies shortly after college for over nine years – first as a designer, then all the way up to an art director – before opening his own business. Boasting over 23 years of experience, he can provide his clients with a "one-stop" shop for their advertising needs. He is proficient in creative writing, building campaigns and proposals, graphic design, branding, media buying, social media, photography, website development and event planning. Just a few of his accomplishments over the years include:


  • Created logo/branding and packaging design for Fishbonz™, which helped Silstar Fish & Tackle secure a multi-million dollar retail placement deal with Target Stores nationwide
  • Developed campaigns and marketing for Arlington Realty for over 15 years, helping them establish a strong foothold in their competitive market as they continue to be a successful real estate firm
  • Provided successful marketing work for two business that I also owned part of; Locals Bar and SakiTumi Grill & Sushi Bar – both businesses were very successful in Columbia SC and SakiTumi is still in operation today
  • Create the annual Holiday Billboard Campaigns for Palmetto State Armory, which garnish attention all over the state of SC (and in 2016 led to a CNN Headline news interview discussing the billboard designs)
  • Created branding, partnership proposals, merchandise and all other marketing materials for up-and-coming Nashville singer/songwriter Ricky Young
  • Worked closely with DGP Promotions to create and build an annual concert event on Lake Murray, SC – DriftJam. Created the name, all marketing materials, website and sponsorship materials for this annual event that has grown tremendously over the last several years.
